The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, only 30 minutes north of Portland, is comprised of 5,150 acres of marshes, grasslands and woodlands. Established in 1965 as a vital winter habitat for wintering waterfowl, Canadian geese, sandhill cranes, shorebirds and songbirds stop at the refuge during spring and fall migrations. Black tailed deer, coyote, raccoon, skunk, beaver, river otter, and brush rabbits also call the refuge home.

The Carty unit hosts the Cathlapotle Plankhouse, a full-scale Chinookan Plankhouse based on archaeological evidence from the Cathlapotle archaeological site located on the Refuge. This archaeological site is what remains of Cathlapotle, a Chinookan town encountered by Lewis and Clark on their expedition. There is a 2-mile self guided hiking trail.

The nearby River ‘S’ unit offers a 4.2 mile auto tour route, and a 1.2 mile seasonal hiking trail.
