Most of us know that old paint, doors, window sills, and crackling paint anywhere can contain high amounts of lead in an older home. But, there is one place that most of us DON’T KNOW about: the BATH TUB. Old tubs may contain high levels of lead from an additive to the porcelain used in the past. Filling up your tub with warm water and tossing your kids in for a soak might not be as great as you think it is. The warm water causes the lead to leech from the tub into the bathwater. If you have small children in your home, it is important to check this largely skipped over spot in the house. There are many different lead test kits available. If your tub does end up containing lead, there are a few different ways to deal with it, including but not limited to; skipping to showers, encapsulating the tub, and replacing the tub. And if you are looking at purchasing an older home, keep this in mind when calculating renovation fees.
